Martingale Collars – Safe and Comfortable Dog Collars
Why use a Martingale Collar?
When a dog backs out of his collar during an on-leash walk, it can be terrifying for both the owner and the pet. It often happens during a moment of panic or stubbornness, when the dog stops walking and the owner continues, pulling the suddenly tight leash hard enough to slide the collar over the dog’s head. The dog is left without identification or restraint.
Some dogs can comfortably wear a buckle collar that won’t slip off under these circumstances. But dogs with narrow heads, like greyhounds and many others, may be able to slip out of any traditional collar. For these dogs, a martingale collar is the best choice.
How Does a Martingale Collar Work?
Martingale collars, sometimes known as greyhound collars, are limited slip collars which tighten slightly when your dog pulls against the leash. A second loop of fabric allows the dog collar to tighten a small amount, usually a few inches, when the loop is pulled tight by a leash. Martingale collars offer the ability to tighten but not choke like some other slip collars do. This makes them safe and pain-free.
How Many Types of Martingale Collars Are There?
Martingale dog collars come in a wide variety of colors and designs, just like regular buckle collars dog. You can get designer dog collars in the martingale style, and even handy leash/collar combos that make walking your dog safely a snap. Martingale collars are also available with padding or fleece inside where the collar touches your dog’s neck. This style is popular with sighthound owners and those who have dogs with very short hair or thin skin. The padding offers extra protection and comfort.
Martingale collars can help your dog walk on leash in safety and comfort. If you have a canine escape artist, or just want an easy-on/easy-off collar for on-leash walks, check out a martingale.
